Founder's Day at The Mission of Nombre de Dios and Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in St. Augustine, Florida, September 4, 2010.
See highlights of Diocese of Saint Augustine Bishop Emeritus Victor Galeone celebrating Mass at the outdoor rustic altar.
See 1924 film footage of the St. Augustine delegation attending the transfer of the casket of Pedro Menendez de Aviles (founder of St. Augustine) to San Nicholas Church in Aviles, Spain.
See the site of the first Catholic Mass which was performed on the grounds of this Spanish mission in the New World when Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed here in 1565.
See the 447-year-old Menendez casket moved to a central place of exhibition in the new museum. The transfer ceremony is assisted by La Compania de Santiago with Florida Living History, Inc.
The historic Menendez casket is escorted from the Mission gift shop to the Chapel of Our Lady of La Leche where a prayer service takes place. Following a brief stop at the Great Cross and the Father Lopez statue, the Menendez casket is carried over the Michael Gannon Bridge and into the new museum.
"The Menendez casket is historically significant because it is the only physical object in the U.S. of the man who established the country's first permanent European settlement," said Eric Johnson, director of Mission of Nombre de Dios.
The dedication of the new museum coincides with the 445th Founder's Day reenactment of the landing of Menendez, founder of our nation's oldest city.
Special thanks to Eric Johnson, director of Mission of Nombre de Dios.
