Save the Apple Jack

The last wooden hull shrimping boat fabricated in St. Augustine, Florida is being converted to a Caravel.

Meet The Apple Jack Captain

Captain Ken Thomas

Apple Jack is to be a tasteful replica of a 16th century Caravel

Steering Committee

Ken Thomas (Captain), Tom Rahner, Bob Hall, Bryan Bowman, Scott Manny and Dan Holiday.

Mission

to Preserve the Apple Jack Hull from demolition.

Reasons:

1. Apple Jack (Hull No. 2260), built in 1980, is the last wooden shrimp boat constructed by Desco Marine. No. 2260 was sold to Kent Thomas in 1981 and he operated it as a shrimper for 30 years.

2. The basic lines of the hull are very similar to those of a 16th Century "Caravel", the type of vessel used by early Spanish explorers such as Ponce de Leon. It's overall length is 73 feet and many Caravels ranged from 69-74 feet.

3. Greek boat builders came to St. Augustine with the Minorcans in the 1780's and began a boat building tradition, which continued for 200 years.

Goal

To complete the project by April 2013 for Ponce Landing and to coordinate its launch with the 500th Anniversary.
