A Brief History of the Casa Monica Hotel

In 1887, Henry Flagler sold a parcel of land to a Bostonian architect named Franklin Smith on which Mr. Smith built the Casa Monica Hotel, naming the hotel after St. Monica, the mother of Aurelius Augustinus, St. Augustine of Hippo, more commonly called today St. Augustine.

The hotel opened on January 1, 1888 with only a few guests registered and was later sold to Henry Flagler a few months later. Flagler renamed Casa Monica Hotel Cordova and the hotel thrived. Flagler later connected the Hotel Cordova to The Alcazar Hotel with a walkway above the street. You may still see the impression of the walkway if you stand on Granada Street with your back to the Casa Monica and look at the north west wall of the Lightner Museum. "A ghost tour guide showed me the crossover one night when I was out on her tour," said filmmaker Bruce Merwin.

The Hotel Cordova closed its doors in 1932 and was purchased 30 years later in 1962 by St. John’s County to be turned into a county courthouse. "There was a good barber shop there when I was young," said filmmaker Bruce Merwin. The structure served as the courthouse for 30 years before being purchased by The Kessler Collection in 1997.

Opening on December 10, 1999, the Casa Monica Hotel was restored to its original name and grandeur, operating once more as a luxurious hotel. Definitely one of the great hotels in St Augustine Florida. I live one block from the Casa Monica and have met the manager, you will not be disappointed with the accommodation provided you by the staff at Casa Monica. Have a great stay.
